A brick walk for me conjures up childhood memories when my parents recruited my siblings and me to help them build one in our backyard. Even though the project seemed laborious, I liked feeling the textures of brick and sand.
Likewise, during winter months many folks consider outside projects by perusing garden catalogs and researching online possibilities. Is it ever too early to start putting ourselves in their shoes?
Let’s start planning. Under DIY Guides and Ideas The Brick Industry Association (BIA) includes “Seven Easy Steps to Installing Your Own [Brick] Walkway, Driveway and Patio.” This PDF clearly explains and illustrates the dry-method process. That is, you don’t have to deal with mixing cement, sand, and water to form mortar and wait for it to cure. The article included a list of supplies, drawings of patterns, and step-by-step instructions.
I especially liked their ditty:
“The warmth and beauty of brick not only welcomes you home–it says, ‘you have arrived’ ” (p.6).
Truly, building character into our living places personalizes our homes and for some of us makes fond reminiscing come alive.
